About the author
I've been interested in radio design and construction since I built my first crystal set at the age of 8, but it was about 25 years ago that I began to take a serious interest in older domestic wireless sets. I find all aspects of wireless fascinating - the development of the technology, cabinet design and the social context.
I particularly like the early mains driven sets, but unfortunately they tend to be big and heavy.
It's always fun to get an old set working - and hear voices and music from a once-loved object that has been abandoned for years. However, I have doubts about heroic restorations, so some will doubtless remain silent for ever. Even so, I enjoy finding out what is wrong with each one of them so that I can unravel their circuitry and technology.
